What Happened to Sim chong in the Oedipal Period?
Bahn Geon-Ho

Abstract
The number of one-parent families, including divorced families and families led by unwed mothers, is increasing. Accordingly, the ¡¯typical¡¯ family structure which has been regarded as an arena of the Oedipus complex is difficult to apply to patients in certain clinical situations. In this context, we reviewed briefly the picture of the Oedipus complex in children with one parent. Several documents which dealt with children with one parent were reviewed. One document, which dealt with the story of Shim-cheong, a classical Korean novel, argued that the Oedipal triangle existed, with an imaginary parent image or surrogate parent object being substituted for the absent parent. Some papers put emphasis on the issue of sexual identity formation, which might also be based on the presence of the Oedipus complex. On the contrary, other papers said that the Oedipal conflict could not be experienced by children with one parent. There was no single hypothesis about the issue, if ever, it was contradictory. Moreover, documentation of children with one parent was scanty. Therefore, more study, both clinical and theoretical, needs to be carried out in this field.
